According to the Informat.ro – INSCOP Research BAROMETER, 9th edition, conducted between April 1–7 2026, 7 out of 10 Romanian’s have a positive opinion (very good or fairly good) about the appointment of Gheorghe Hagi as head coach of Romania’s national football team.
The Informat.ro – INSCOP Research BAROMETER is a monthly opinion poll conducted by INSCOP Research at the request of the news platform Informat.ro, in partnership with the Strategic Thinking Group think tank.
The Informat.ro – INSCOP Research BAROMETER aims to bring to public attention topics of interest to stimulate national conversations on diverse subjects and key public policies for Romania’s present and future, based on citizen’s opinions, in partnership with prestigious think tanks and academic institutions. It is an initiative intended to contribute to strengthening democracy by using scientific and credible tools that place citizen’s voices at the center of public debate.
Methodology: Data were collected between April 1–7 2026. Research method: questionnaire-based interviews. Data were collected using the CATI method (telephone interviews). The simple random sample included 1,100 respondents and is representative of the significant sociodemographic categories (gender, age, occupation) for Romania’s non-institutionalized population aged 18 and older. The maximum margin of error is ±3% at a 95% confidence level.
Remus Ștefureac, Director of INSCOP Research: “The appointment of Gheorghe Hagi generates a broad social consensus, rarely seen in Romanian’s public space. This perception is based on his symbolic capital and his status as an emblematic figure of Romanian football. There is a clear differentiation of opinions between segments that are culturally closer to football and those more distant, indicating that interest and engagement in this field are unevenly distributed socio-demographically. The enthusiasm surrounding Gheorghe Hagi’s appointment as head coach does not fully translate into confidence in the national team’s future performance, suggesting a distinction between symbolic support for the leader and a realistic assessment of results. Although a majority is emerging that believes the national team will qualify for the 2028 European Football Championship, it remains fragile, as the public is cautious regarding expectations of sporting performance.”
Head coach of the national football team
71.8% of Romanian’s have a good or very good opinion about the appointment of Gheorghe Hagi as head coach of Romania’s national football team (about 40.7% have a very good opinion, while 31.1% have a fairly good opinion). Only 4.3% of Romanian’s have a fairly bad or very bad opinion about this appointment (2.7% fairly bad and 1.6% very bad). 23.4% of Romanian’s have no opinion on this subject, while 0.5% did not respond.
Those who have a positive opinion about the appointment of Gheorghe Hagi as head coach in higher-than-average proportions include: PSD and PNL voters, men, individuals aged 45 to 59, residents of Bucharest and rural areas, and public sector employees. USR voters, women, young people under 30, and residents of large urban areas are more likely than the rest of the population to have no opinion on this subject.
Qualification for the 2028 European Championship
49.9% of Romanian’s believe that the national football team will qualify for the 2028 European Championship (14.5% answered “definitely yes” and 35.4% “probably yes”). 30.6% of respondents do not believe the team will qualify (15.2% answered “probably not” and 15.4% “definitely not”). 19.4% do not know or cannot estimate, while 0.1% did not respond.
Those who believe that Romania’s national football team will qualify for the 2028 European Championship in higher-than-average proportions include: PSD and AUR voters and individuals with primary education. USR voters, men, individuals aged 45 to 59, those with higher education, residents of Bucharest and large urban areas, and public sector employees are more likely than average to believe that Romania’s national football team will not qualify.
